I’m doing a talk next week that will be of interest to anyone using Silverlight who wants to ensure their applications are accessible to as many users as possible. Here’s the official blurb…

Much has been written about how to make traditional, HTML based, web sites accessible. There are published guidelines, validation tools and an abundance of online resources. However, the increasing popularity of Rich Internet Applications (RIA), like Silverlight, raises interesting questions about how to achieve the same levels of accessibility.

This twilight looks at how it is possible to build highly accessible web applications by leveraging the accessibility features of Silverlight. We'll take a close look at the recently launched, ButtercupReader application that allows blind and partially sighted users to read DAISY encoded digital audio books online.

We'll also take a broader look at using Silverlight under the New Zealand e-Government Web Guidelines and discuss strategies for maintaining compliance while still leveraging the power of Silverlight.

Date: Wednesday 29 April 2009
